Welcome to Nordic Patent Institute
The Nordic Patent Institute has now been operational for 10 months and we estimate that the number of applications received will reach 100 by mid-November. This number is satisfactory as mentioned in the last issue of this newsletter. Two thirds of the applications continue to be filed by Norwegian applicants, one third by Danish. It is a particular pleasure to report that the Institute has now received its first application from Iceland.

Supplementary International Search
WIPO is introducing a new service under the PCT-system from 1 January 2009. This service gives PCT applicants the option of requesting supplementary searches from participating International Search Authorities (ISA) in addition to the main PCT search, thereby reducing the likelihood of new prior art being found in the national phase.
The Nordic Patent Institute will be one of the first ISAs to offer this service from the start.

The PCT Assembly in Geneva
The PCT Assembly held its 38th Session in Geneva, September 22 to 30, 2008, and adopted a number of amendments to the PCT regulations concerning the introduction of the new supplementary international searches (SIS). The Assembly also decided on a number of minor amendments to the current regulations.

Harmonisation of European PCT patent practice
The Nordic Patent Institute is committed to extensive cooperation with European PCT authorities, and participated in a first meeting in Helsinki in September.
